On Friday, September 12th, 2014 the Modena Fire Company along with an Engine from the Arcelor Mittal Fire Department were dispatched at 2236 to the Coatesville Scrap Iron Company for a fluff pile fire.

To obtain the scrap metal from cars, vehicles are drained of fluids and dismantled and then the vehicle body is shredded. Metal pieces are magnetically picked up from the shredding pile. The waste and residue leftover is called auto shredder residue or auto "fluff."

Modena Deputy Chief Perine arrived at 2241 to confirm two large piles of fluff "well involved" in flames and requested a full company response from the Westwood and Wagontown Fire Companies, along with a Ladder Truck from the City of Coatesville Fire Department.

Several of our members were on station working at a fundraising event and Engine 44-5 responded immediately. Upon arrival, Engine 44-5 began to supply water to the scene through Coatesville Ladder 41.

Additional Tankers were requested to respond to the scene which brought West Bradford Tanker 39, Keystone Tanker 08, and East Brandywine Engine 49-5. As the Tankers arrived on scene, they were directed to their respective positions to supply the Engines which were performing suppression activities.

Rescue 44's crew also assisted with suppression efforts. Ambulance 44-1 also responded to deliver rehabilitation supplies and water for the firefighters.

The fire was officially placed under control at 2336.

All units cleared the scene at 0108.
