By Battalion Chief John Sly
December 24, 2014

On Wednesday, December 24th, 2014 Engine 44-5 and Ambulance 44-1 were dispatched at 1141 to assist the Sadsburyville Fire Company for reports of a house on fire on Old Wilmington Road south of Business Route 30 in Sadsbury Township.

Shortly after dispatch, the Sadsbury Township Police arrived to confirm that a house in the 900 block of Old Wilmington Road was "fully involved in fire."

Sadsburyville Assistant Chief Reynolds arrived and requested a "Working Fire Dispatch," which added Ambulance 144 to the call as well. Assistant Chief Reynolds established "Old Wilmington Command," requesting for Fire Police to close Old Wilmington Road to aid in the firefighting efforts. He also declared that the fire be fought from the exterior only due to the potential for a complete collapse of the home.

Ambulance 44-1 responded at 1144 followed shortly thereafter by Engine 44-5 responded at 1146. Upon arrival of Engine 44-5 at 1151, a water supply was established to supply Sadsburyville Engine 31-1. Shortly after the arrival of firefighters, the home completely collapsed.

Westwood EMS crews provided firefighter rehabilitation services at the scene for the multiple fire companies who responded to this blaze.

The homeowner was home at the time of the fire and suffered burn injuries. The patient was transported to a local trauma center for care. Fortunately, no firefighters suffered any injuries while operating on the scene. Thank you to Harry's Hot Dogs for providing food to the scene for firefighters who spent Christmas Eve battling this fire.

All units cleared the scene at 1523.

Units: Engine 44-5, Ambulance 44-1, and Ambulance 144
