Working Bedroom Fire in Quiet Village
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Battalion Chief John Sly
January 23, 2015

On Friday, January 23rd, 2015 the Westwood Fire Company along with automatic aid from the Sadsburyville Fire Company and a Tanker from the East Brandywine Fire Company were all dispatched at 0031 to the 100 block of Country Club Road in the Quiet Village Section of Valley Township for reports of a house on fire.

Calls to 911 indicated that a chair in the bedroom was on fire. Shortly after the dispatch, the Valley Township Police Department arrived on the scene reporting that the fire was extending throughout the room.

Battalion Chief Sly arrived on the scene four minutes after dispatch at 0035 and confirmed a working fire on the second floor of the home, with multiple occupants in the process of evacuating. Noting that at least one homeowner was utilizing a portable oxygen cylinder, Battalion 44 requested a Medic unit to respond to the scene as well. Ambulance 44-1 also responded within 2 minutes of the dispatch.

Engine 44-5 responded five minutes after dispatch at 0036 followed by Sadsburyville Engine 31-1 at 0037 and Engine 31-2 just a minute later at 0038.

Sadsburyville Engine 31-1 was the first apparatus to arrive on the scene at 0039. Crews were instructed by Battalion 44 to begin suppression efforts on the second floor. Engine 31-2 arrived just one minute later and crews extended ladders to the home to gain access to the roof.

Engine 44-5 arrived on the scene at 0041 and supplied water to Sadsburyville Engine 31-1. At this point, Battalion Chief Sly established "Country Club Command." Due to the rapid response of the firefighters from both Westwood and Sadsburyville, the initial interior crews were able to contain the fire to the area of origin in just 11 minutes. Damage to the home was limited to only the bedroom where the fire was initially reported.

Westwood EMS crews from both Ambulance 44-1 and Ambulance 144 lead by EMS Chief Dill ensured that the residents were all safe and uninjured.

The Chester County and Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshals were called to the scene to investigate the cause, while BELFOR Property Restoration was contacted to help secure two windows which were compromised in the suppression efforts.

All units cleared the scene at 0151.
