By Battalion Chief John Sly
February 20, 2015

On Friday, February 20th, 2015 Westwood EMS was dispatched at 2108 to the Eastbound lanes of the Route 30 Bypass West of Old Wilmington Road in Sadsbury Township for reports of an auto accident. Two minutes after the initial dispatch, the assignment was upgraded to a serious accident adding Rescue 44 to the incident.

Sadsburyville Chief Grossman arrived on the scene at 2115 hours, reporting a two vehicle accident with a tractor trailer on its side. Chief Grossman established "Bypass Command" at this point, and further investigated to determine that there were three patients involved. Fortunately, all three Westwood Ambulances were already responding due the reports of the serious accident. It was also confirmed that the driver of the tractor trailer was trapped inside.

Rescue 44 and Wagontown Rescue 35 were redirected to South Bonsall School Road for the rescue operation, as that road provided better access to the tractor trailer. Sadsburyville Engine 31-1 arrived on the scene on the Bypass at 2118 and provided scene lighting and began the rescue process.

Sadsburyville, Wagontown and Westwood firefighters worked diligently to extricate the driver of the tractor trailer. Extrication was complete at 2147 hours.

Wagontown Fire Police closed down the Westbound lanes of the Route 30 Bypass at Airport Road for the duration of the incident.

As the incident was determined to be located in West Caln Township, Rescue 35 remained on the scene assisting the tow company and command was turned over to Wagontown Deputy Chief Reber.

Units: Rescue 44, Ambulance 144, Ambulance 44-1, and Ambulance 44-2

Mutual Aid: Medic 93-2
