On February 7th, 2016 at 2250, the Modena and Westwood Fire Companies and a Coatesville Ladder Truck were dispatched to the 100 block of Clearfield Lane in East Fallowfield Township for a chimney fire. A call to 911 indicated flames and sparks were coming from a chimney.

Deputy Chief Scott arrived on location at 2257 and determined there to be no smoke or fire conditions evident from the outside. Ladder 41-2 arrived at 2300 and set up their aerial to ascend to the chimney. Engine 44-5 arrived at 2302 and went interior to the division 1 fire box to clean it of the fire that was burning inside. Engine 37-2 and Engine 37-1 arrived at 2302 and crews went to division 2 with their thermal imagining cameras to check for fire in the walls.

After investigating all crews checked back with Clearfield Lane Command, being held by Modena Assistant Chief Bryant, with negative results of a fire condition in the chimney or walls surrounding the chimney. The situation was placed under control at 2308 and all units returned their equipment to their apparatus to return to quarters.

It was believed that when the material in the firebox was replenished to burn, it kicked off sparks and flames that could be seen outside of the dwelling. All residents that have a chimney are reminded to get their chimneys cleaned on a yearly basis to help prevent any home fires.
