| On Sunday, June 10th, 2007 Chief John Sly participated in a cancer benefit organized by the Parkesburg VFW Post 4480. Joann Carmen, the manager of the VFW who is a cancer survivor that lost her husband to cancer, organized a "shave off" to help raise funds for cancer research. As many people know, the Parkesburg VFW has always been extremely supportive of the community and our fire company. When Joann began to organize this event, she asked members of the community and members of the VFW to raise money in support of this cause. She asked Chief Sly to help raise funds by telling people if they will donate, he will shave his whole head. The day began with 23 registrants who had committed money and donations to shave their heads. Men and women, children and adults all signed up to help out. By the end of the day, 59 total people joined in by donating and shaving their heads. Westwood Fire Company gave Chief Sly a $100 donation to start out, and our bingo players all helped out by giving a donation towards the cause. A total of $905 was raised by Chief Sly's efforts. The best news is that a total of $26,000 was raised by all 59 participants in this one day event. All of the proceeds will be given directly to the American Cancer Society specifically to research. EMT Lisa Smith also donated her time and haircutting experience to act as a shaver for the day. The day was well planned and everyone in attendance had a wonderful time for a terrific cause. Thank you to the Parkesburg VFW and Joann for all of your kindhearted assistance you continue to provide to those in need. |
