Rainbow Elementary School Students Learn About Fire Prevention

On Thursday, October 9th, 2008 students at the Rainbow Elementary School were given lessons in fire safety and fire prevention during the annual Fire Prevention Week activities held at the school by the Westwood Fire Company.

The day began with Vice Principal Bentman introducing Chief McWilliams to the group of students in the school's gymnasium.

Chief McWilliams talked about fire prevention and then showed a 15 minute fire safety video to the assembly.

Students were then able to ask questions and find out anything they ever wanted to know about the fire company.

Following the question and answer session, firefighters in full turn out gear entered so the students could get an up close look at the gear and what a firefighter looks like. One of the firefighters was Firefighter/EMT Michelle Smith, while the other firefighter was Firefighter Erin Talley from the New Holland Fire Company. Interestingly, Firefighter Talley is a full time 4th grade teacher at the Rainbow Elementary School.

The firefighters took their gear off to show the students that under all of the seemingly frightening gear, they are just regular people inside and there is nothing to be afraid of. The students were reminded that firefighters are their friends in case of a fire and they should never hide from them.

After the indoor demonstrations, everyone went outside to get an up close look at some of the apparatus and equipment.

Thanks to the staff of the Rainbow Elementary School for helping to organize a successful fire safety day and thanks to Firefighter (and teacher!) Erin Talley for your help!
