Westwood Firefighters Visit Rainbow Elementary School

By Assistant Fire Chief Adam Grossman
October 25, 2017

Wednesday October 25th, 2017 was the annual fire prevention event at the Rainbow Elementary School in Valley Township. Rescue 44, Ambulance 44-1, Ambulance 144, Traffic 44 and ATV 44 with personnel headed to the school in hopes to make a difference in a child's life when it comes to fire safety and prevention. The Sadsburyville Fire Company was also invited to attend bringing Engine 31-1 and additional personnel to assist with the day.

The day began around 1330 hours with a fire prevention assembly for half of the school, in the gymnasium of the school. Firefighter/EMT Crawford talked to the students about the importance of having smoke detectors in their house, what they sound like and what to do in the event of a smoke detector activating. In addition children were instructed on having an escape plan out of their house in case of an emergency, what to do and who to call.

After the lecture part of the presentation, Firefighters Rust and Waldrop donned full turn out gear and air packs breathing air to 'scare' the children with the noises they might hear when a fire breaks out in the house. Children were also instructed on what to do if they’re trapped in their house and hear these 'noises' crawling through their bedroom.

Following the ending of the assembly teachers brought their students outside to view the fire trucks up close and to ask questions about what they were taught, as well as questions about all the different fire equipment. A popular question was why are the fire trucks blue!

There was a second assembly later in the afternoon. Thank you to all the members who attended by giving up their days of work to further educate today’s youth on fire safety.

Units: Rescue 44, Ambulance 44-1, Ambulance 144, ATV 44, Traffic 44

Mutual Aid: Engine 31-1
