Westwood EMS Skills Review Night Strengthens Training and Readiness

October 29, 2026

Westwood EMS personnel recently participated in a comprehensive Skills Review Night designed to reinforce critical patient care competencies and ensure providers remain prepared for the emergencies they encounter every day. The evening featured hands-on training stations that allowed EMTs and paramedics to review, practice, and sharpen essential lifesaving skills in a controlled learning environment.

Participants rotated through multiple stations covering airway management, cardiac monitoring, cardiac arrest management with PIT Crew CPR, and hemorrhage control. Each station provided opportunities to review current best practices, discuss clinical decision-making, and perform practical skills utilizing the equipment and techniques used in the field.

The airway station focused on patient assessment and airway interventions, emphasizing proper techniques for maintaining and securing a patient's airway during respiratory emergencies. At the cardiac monitor station, crews reviewed monitor operations, rhythm recognition, and patient assessment to improve confidence and efficiency when managing cardiac patients.

A dedicated cardiac arrest and PIT Crew CPR station reinforced the importance of coordinated team-based resuscitation efforts. Members practiced high-performance CPR, effective role assignments, and seamless transitions during cardiac arrest scenarios to maximize patient outcomes.

The blood control station provided a review of hemorrhage management techniques, including the use of direct pressure, wound packing, and tourniquets. These skills are vital in both traumatic injuries and life-threatening bleeding emergencies where rapid intervention can save lives.

In addition, crews received training on Westwood EMS's new bariatric ambulance and specialized bariatric transport equipment. Personnel reviewed the safe operation of the unit, proper deployment of bariatric patient movement devices, and techniques for transporting larger patients while prioritizing patient dignity, comfort, and provider safety. The session emphasized teamwork, communication, and the specialized considerations necessary for safely managing complex patient movements.

Training nights like these are a critical part of Westwood EMS's commitment to clinical excellence, continuous improvement, and delivering the highest quality emergency medical care to the communities we serve. Through ongoing education, realistic hands-on practice, and investment in advanced equipment, our providers remain ready to answer the call when it matters most.
