By Fire Chief John Sly
December 19, 2006

On Tuesday, December 19th, 2006 just as Ambulance 44 was pulling back into the Station following the auto accident in Coatesville City, another accident was dispatched on Amethyst Court in South Coatesville Borough in the Modena Fire Company's territory. Ambulance 44 was dispatched as part of the response at 1809.

Ambulance 44 responded a 1811 and was advised that a vehicle had struck a building and a report that a natural gas line had been struck at the scene.

Deputy Chief Perine of the Modena Fire Company responded and was advised of the same, and due to the additional information of the gas line leaking, additional fire units were dispatched at 1812, which called for Engine 44-5 to respond to the scene.

Ambulance 44 was the first arriving unit, along with Deputy Chief Perine, and found that a vehicle was backed into a building and the natural gas line was in fact ruptured. Deputy Chief Perine of the Modena Fire Company assumed "South Coatesville Command" and requested additional resources from the City of Coatesville Fire Department for one Engine and one Ambulance.

Due to the severity of this incident, crews from Ambulance 44 and the South Coatesville Police Department began to evacuate all of the residents of the complex.

Coatesville Engine 41-2 arrived and was assigned to lay a 5" hoseline in the roadway up to the scene to standby. Modena Engine 37-2 and Tac 37 followed shortly behind. Engine 44-5 was asked to standby at the hydrant at the end of the street.

Once crew arrived, firefighters donned air packs and approached the vehicle and shut off the gas line. This incident, which had a potential for a great amount of damage, was quickly brought under control.

PECO Gas was contacted to respond to the scene and secure the ruptured line and check for any underground damage.

Once PECO arrived on the scene, Deputy Chief Perine of the Modena Fire Company turned the incident scene over to them and released all fire and EMS units on the scene at 1902.

Units: Ambulance 44
