| On Monday, March 3rd, 2008 the Westwood Fire Company and Medic 93 were dispatched at 1428 to the 100 block of Stoyer Road in the Villages at Hillview Development in Valley Township for a residential rescue.
A construction worker was struck by a roof truss which was being set by a crew building a new home in the development. The worker was stuck on what is to become the second floor of the home and was offering complaints of a back injury.
Rescue 44 responded at 1430 and was advised of the conditions, with the victim being on the upper floors of the partially constructed home. With this information, Lieutenant Dill requested City of Coatesville Ladder 43 to assist at the scene in case an aerial ladder would be needed to access the victim.
Assistant Chief Tracey of the City of Coatesville Fire Department arrived on the scene and advised all units where to find the construction site. He requested Coatesville Ladder 43 to provide a ground ladder to access the victim to do a primary assessment for EMS personnel.
Assistant Chief Tracey established "Stoyer Road Command" at the request of Lieutenant Dill.
As units began to arrive on the scene, firefighters and EMS personnel began to set up equipment and supplies that would be needed to not only access the patient, but to safely move the patient down to the ground. A stokes extrication basket was retrieved from Rescue 44, along with a spinal immobilization board from Ambulance 44. Firefighters also had to utilize a Sawzall to cut through some of the trusses to remove the patient.
Firefighters from Westwood and Coatesville worked together to safely remove the worker from the roof area and down onto the ground. The patient was successfully extricated at 1507.
Westwood EMS and Medic 93 personnel tended to the patient and it was determined that the injuries were fortunately non-life threatening. Ambulance 44 then transported the patient to Brandywine Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
All units cleared the scene at 1514. |
