By Assistant Fire Chief John Sly
August 9, 2008

On Saturday, August 9th, 2008 just after many of our members completed cleaning up from the the Valley Day activities, the Westwood Fire Company and Medic 93 were dispatched at 1751 to the intersection of West Lincoln Highway and Rainbow Road in the Hayti section of Valley Township for an auto accident reported serious.

Assistant Chief Sly responded at 1752 and was advised by the Chester County 911 center that at least one occupant of a vehicle was reported unconscious, and possibly trapped inside a vehicle. With this information, Assistant Chief Sly requested that a helicopter be placed on standby until the injuries could be assessed. Air medical helicopter Skycare 1 was placed on standby at this time. Additionally, Assistant 44 requested the Sadsburyville Fire Company Quick Response Service to be dispatched to assist.

Assistant Chief Sly arrived on the scene at 1756. A quick survey of the scene determined that there were three total patients, with two requiring advanced medical care. Two additional Ambulances were requested to respond to the scene, as well as additional manpower from the Westwood Fire Company. Washington Hose Company Ambulances 41-1 and 41-2 were dispatched to assist. Helicopter Skycare 1 was also requested to fly to the Chester County Airport, in the area of the accident scene, to await one of the victims to be transported there via ambulance for rapid air transport to a local trauma facility. Assistant 44 established "Rainbow Command."

Rescue 44 was instructed to pull in directly in front of the vehicle with the victim trapped and remove the passenger side door to extricate the patient. Crews were also instructed to check for a small fire smoldering in the engine compartment.

Sadsburyville QRS personnel arrived and helped to treat the injured occupants until enough Ambulances could arrive on the scene.

Washies Ambulances arrived and were given directions to the all injured victims.

Traffic 44 and Westwood Fire Police closed West Lincoln Highway between Saint George Street and Washington Lane. Fire Police were also positioned in the intersection at the accident scene to divert cross traffic.

Ambulance 44 and Medic 93-3 transported one patient to the Chester County Airport to meet Skycare 1, who would transport the victim to the Lancaster General Hospital's trauma center.

Washies Ambulance 41-1 and Medic 93-1 transported one patient to Brandywine Hospital, and Ambulance 41-2 transported a second patient to Brandywine Hospital.

Westwood Fire/Rescue crews swept up broken glass and cleaned up fluids in the roadway, while towing units from Fling's Towing and McFall's Towing removed the damaged vehicles from the scene.

All units cleared the scene at 1841 and the roadway was reopened.

Units: Ambulance 44, Rescue 44, and Traffic 44

Mutual Aid: Washies Ambulance 41-1 and Ambulance 41-2, Medic 93-1 and Medic 93-3, Skycare 1
