House Fire in East Fallowfield

By Fire Chief Randy Scott
December 5, 2010

On Sunday December 5th at 16:29 hrs, the Westwood Fire Company along with one engine each from Pomeroy and Modena Fire Company and one tanker each from Cochranville and Po-Mar Lin Fire Companies where dispatched to the unit block of Juniata Dr. in the Fallowfield Farms Development section of East Fallowfield Township for a report of a house fire.

As units responded the Chester County 911 Center advised them that the caller reported the house filling with smoke and possibly coming from the woodstove area.

Chief Scott arrived to report a 2 story structure with nothing showing from the exterior and assumed Juniata Command. Deputy Chief Kerrigan and Captain Deckman where the first to enter the structure and reported light smoke in the area of the wood burning stove.

As responding units arrived their assignments ranged from ventilation to assisting with the removal of the burning material in the fire box of the stove and checking the structure for extension in the walls. Further investigation resulted in finding no extension of any fire outside of the chimney flue area. The smoke came from a crack in the piping directly behind the wood stove.

Command placed the incident under control at 17:00 hrs and released the two tankers. The balance of the assignment was released shortly afterwards once the smoke and hot ashes where removed from the building.

The Westwood Fire Company would like to remind everyone that any open flame heating source should be checked periodically by a licensed chimney service company.

Command was terminated at 17:10 hrs.
